Academics
Academic Philosophy
Little Rock Prep’s first priority is the measurable academic achievement of our students. We provide an extended 188-day school year and extended academic day from 7:25 am to 5:00 pm. The core subjects of English language arts, mathematics, history, and science are the primary focus of the academic day, with English language arts and mathematics taught for 120 minutes each day; and social studies and science taught for 45 minutes each day.
All classes are instructed by highly effective, masterful teachers whose primary focus is to drive student achievement, along with modeling and reinforcing the behavior that is expected of our students. As part of our extended day, we provide supports that ensure all students are achieving the high academic standards set by the school. Supports include Homework Center, Mandatory Academic Tutoring, and Academic Advisories to assist students with their academic progress. We stress the importance of back to basics learning as the primary means of preparing all students for college preparatory high school classes and college.
We maintain a culture of discipline to ensure that all students remain focused on the mission to excel in high school college preparatory track programs, college, and beyond. Everyday students will be reminded to PUSH towards their goals:
- Perseverance: To relentlessly pursue our dreams and goals
- Urgency: Time is of the essence in achieving our goals
- Scholarship: Learning at high academic levels
- Honesty: Integrity in everything that we do
Academic Curriculum
We believe in using standards as a template for designing internal standards that will clearly identify exactly what our students should know and demonstrate, based on the expectations of state standards and our own faculty. Our teachers use a detailed item-analysis process of assessments, including released Augmented Benchmark Examination tests, to identify precise skills and content that students need for success on these tests. The LR Prep curriculum standards have been created by blending the Arkansas Curriculum Frameworks with these skills and contents. Our teachers plan their learning activiteis and how they will assess mastery of each standard from our internal standards. Our six-week assessments and year-end assessments are developed prior to the start of the school year, based on our internal assessments, to guarantee a high degree of accountabilty to teaching the necessary material.
Our unique standards based instruction, delivered by our teachers, relies on a selection of branded curriculum as resources for improving instruction. Our curricular resources include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Scott Foresman-Addison (Math, Literacy, and Science)
- Singapore Math
- Saxon Math
- History Alive!
- Fictional, age-appropriate novels
Faculty
Our faculty are chosen through a highly selective, rigorous interview process. We seek teachers who are dedicated to the academic and behavioral success of all students, have the high-capacity and knowledge to drive rigorous instruction, and are willing to hone their craft through intense professional development sessions that begin four weeks prior to the first day of school and each week thereafter. Our Founding Teachers were selected out of many submitted applications because they hold the beliefs of the school's mission and hold a "no excuses" attitude toward student academic achievement.
